“Not another parody visual novel,” you say as you roll your eyes and scroll down your Twitter feed. It seems like a trend, people throwing even the most mundane things like office supplies at you to romance. Yet there’s something compelling about these off-the-wall tales of drama, love, and sometimes even lust. I personally can’t get enough of the parody genre, because more times than not, you’re getting a deep and engaging story underneath the comedic veil. Even when the game’s love interests are based on real people.
Before you keep scrolling through your feed, why not give some of these parody visual novels a try? You may be pleasantly surprised and find a brand new favorite game!
Keanu Reeves Dating Sim
There’s no better way to start this list than with a dating sim appropriately called Keanu Reeves Dating Sim. Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves? With his rising popularity through memes, movies, and now video games, it seems like this visual novel was bound to happen eventually. The best part of this hilarious experience is not only being able to date Keanu, but having nine Keanus to choose from, each a nod to one of his movie roles. While each romance route is only a few minutes long, they feel satisfying and will leave you with a good laugh—even in the bad endings.
You’ll be able to play through the entirety of this game in a single sitting. However, don’t expect a large and lavish game. The heart of this visual novel is in the fancy fonts, generic music, and actual photographs used for sprites and CGs. Make sure to hop in a Discord call and share your screen with a friend for the optimal experience.
I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator
This is an interesting addition to the list as it’s an officially licensed game commissioned and released by KFC themselves. Play as a rising young chef who enters culinary school and falls head-over-heels in love with the master of chicken, a surprisingly attractive anime-fied Colonel Sanders. The story in this game is a little nonsensical, but that’s the game’s intention. However, the moments that are funniest are scenes where the protagonist and Colonel Sanders are cooking together. There’s heart-thumping moments between the pair, and I swear, I actually swooned.
This game knows what it wants to be and lays it all out for you. While some people hate it, I had a blast playing it. The experience is worth it for the novelty alone, but who knows…you may leave with a crush on the Colonel and a craving for some fried chicken.
John Cena’s Sexy High School Adventure
Fear not, this game is not as risqué as it sounds. In fact, the only nudity the game features is John Cena’s in-ring wrestling attire. Speaking of John Cena…every single character in this game is the man, the myth, the legend himself. The teacher, your fellow classmates, and everyone in between.
John Cena’s Sexy High School Adventure is a true parody game, capturing the heart of the genre with its photoshopped sprites, photographic backgrounds, and off-the-wall story about trying to get a date to go with you to prom. This game will have you laughing so long as you know what you’re getting into. John Cena’s Sexy High School Adventure doesn’t take itself seriously, and neither should you! So buckle up, grab some friends for the best experience, and get ready to woo one of the many Cenas out there.
